Francis Cranmer Penrose (1817-1903), FRIBA, architect; b. Bracebridge, Lincs; educ. Bedford School (1825-9), Winchester (1829-35) and Magdalene College, Cambridge; rowed for Cambridge in the Boat Races, 1840, 1841 and 1842 (Cambridge being victorious in 1840 and 1841); surveyor of St Paul’s Cathedral, 1852, and designer of the Wellington tomb in the Crypt; designer of, and director of, the British School at Athens, 1886-7 and 1890-1; president of the Royal Institute of British Architects, 1894-6
