Ernest Galley came from Horden, a coastal village in Co. Durham.

The group comes with the note: ‘M.M. for Marne 20th-30th July 1918. As a Runner he showed great tenacity in delivering all his messages under heavy artillery and machine gun fire and was of the greatest help to his company commander. His conduct during the eight days was an example to all. Signed W. D. B. Thompson, Captain.’
