Percy George Illsley was born in Spalding, near Lincoln. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Hussars of the Line at Barnsley on 4 January 1899. With the 13th Hussars he served in India. Promoted to Serjeant in June 1904. Transferred to the 11th Hussars in February 1912. Attained the rank of Squadron Quartermaster Serjeant in November 1912. As such he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war with ‘B’ Squadron on 15 August 1914. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal with gratuity in October 1918. With copied m.i.c., service papers and roll extracts.
