Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 3 clasps, Cape Colony, Transvaal, Wittebergen (2709 Pte. W. Devereux, S. Stafford Regt.), a little polished, nearly very fine £180-220
The recipient was severely wounded near Eland’s Drift, Crocodile River, on 29 June 1901, whilst serving with the South Stafford Company of the 11th Battalion Mounted Infantry during the guerrilla war. In June 1901 the 11th M.I. was chasing and fighting the renegade Boer commandos who were attacking the blockhouses along the Crocodile River in the Eastern Transvaal. In the action of 29 June 1901, the 11th M.I. suffered eight men wounded from various regiments, one of whom subsequently died of his wounds.
