The 1st Midlothian Rifle Volunteers were formed at Leith on 6th December, 1859. Originally comprising 4 companies, a further 4 companies were added in 1863. The unit was redesignated 5th Volunteer Battalion The Royal Scots, in Army Order 144 of 1888, and in 1908 became 7th Battalion Royal Scots T.F.
