Metropolitan Middlesex, Clerkenwell Green, John Roberts, mule Halfpenny, ye drvm, 1.22g/6h (N 7893, this piece; cf. BW. 665 and D 1977A). Patches of verdigris on either side, otherwise very fine and an interesting curio; believed the only known specimen from the dies this way round £100-200

The reverse die was intended for the halfpenny of one of Roberts’ near neighbours, Edward Usher of Mutton Lane (D 1977A; lot 116 in this catalogue). A converse mule, linking the obverse of Usher’s token with the reverse of Roberts’, is in the Museum of London (
