Benjamin Richards was born on 6 January 1792 at Leighton, Montgomeryshire, and attested for the 39th (Dorsetshire) Regiment of Foot at Shrewsbury on 6 January 1806. Appointed a Drummer on 16 July 1807, he ‘served four years in the Mediterranean, three years in the Peninsula, nine months in North America, five years in France and was present at the taking of Procida and Ischia in Naples Bay and at the Battles of Vittoria, Pyrenees, Nivelle, Nive, Orthes, St. Pierre, Cambo River, Toulouse, and Lake Champlain, North America, the remainder of the time at home’, and was discharged on 16 May 1834 after 24 years and 131 days’ service. He died in Shrewsbury on 29 May 1864.
