James Butler served with the 59th (2nd Nottinghamshire) Regiment in Afghanistan and was severely wounded by gun shot at the battle of Ahmed Khel, 19 April 1880. Promoted Corporal on 30 January 1881, and Sergeant on 24 April 1883, he left active service on 19 February 1887.
