John Winter was born on 30 September 1877 in London and attested for the Wiltshire Regiment at London on 30 September 1891. Appointed a Drummer on 1 December 1892, he served with the Regiment in South Africa during the Boer War from 16 December 1899 until 4 July 1900 (entitled to the Queen’s South Africa Medal with clasps for Cape Colony and Orange Free State). Awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal with a Gratuity of £5 on 1 April 1910, he was discharged on 1 October 1913 after 22 years and 2 days’ service.
