J. Ross served as a Sergeant-Drummer with the 2nd Battalion King’s Own Scottish Borderers in the Sudan with the Suakim Field Force, and took part in the action against the Dervish Army at the southern Water Fort at Gemaizah on 20 December 1888. He subsequently transferred to the Regimental Depot at Berwick-on-Tweed.
