John Metcalf was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, and served with the West Yorkshire Regiment during the Second Boer War. He re-engaged for service during the Great War, aged 40, with the 3rd Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment, and served with the 1st Battalion in the French theatre of war, from 7 October 1914. He was discharged ‘Medically Unfit’ due to a heart problem aggravated by active service, 2 March 1918.
