William Henry Baker was born in Huntingdon, Huntingdonshire (now Cambridgeshire), and attested for the Scots Guards at Bradford, in February 1900. He served with the Scots Guards during the Second Boer War, 15 February 1902 - 4 October 1902, and was discharged 27 February 1912, having served 12 years with the Colours.
Baker re-engaged for service during the Great War and served as a Sergeant with both the West Yorkshire Regiment, and the Labour Corps.
