Racing was held on a variety of courses on the outskirts of Derby in the 18th century, most notably at The Holmes, where a ‘handsome and commodious’ grandstand was built. The coming of the railway meant that racing moved to Little Chester in 1848 and a grandstand was erected in 1852. The venue was also used by the South Derbyshire Cricket Club from 1863 and county cricket was played there from 1871, and by Derby County Football Club from 1884 to 1895. The final race meeting was held in August 1939, following which the land was requisitioned for military use
