Born in Bristol, Somerset on 19 September 1855, William Hookway joined the service as Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. FISGARD, then drafted to H.M.S. IMPLACABLE on 3 February 1872. Advanced to Able Seaman aboard H.M.S. LONDON in January 1875, he served aboard H.M.S. PHILOMEL from 10 June 1875 until 5 September 1877. In January 1880 was made Leading Seaman, only to be disrated to Able Seaman six months later whilst aboard H.M.S. DASHER. After two spells in cells he ended his career by deserting from H.M.S. ASSISTANCE at Portsmouth on 4 January 1886.
