Edward Ewens was born in Petersfield, Hampshire on 6 August 1848 and joined the service as Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. DUNCAN on 17 July 1863. Advanced to A.B. aboard H.M.S. CROCODILE in October 1867, to Leading Seaman in H.M.S. EUPHRATES during February 1872 and achieved Petty Officer status in September 1873. Served aboard H.M.S. ORONTES from May 1877 until paid off on 16 0ctober 1882. After five weeks leave he was drafted to H.M.S. JUMNA to participate in the Soudan operations during 1884, ultimately being pensioned when paid off from her in August 1886. During 1877 he lost a good conduct badge on two occasions which seems to have debarred him from earning a LS & GC award.
