Arthur Mellefont was born in Cork, Ireland on 1 November 1857. He first entered as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. REVENGE on 3 February 1873, followed by IMPREGNABLE (1873-74) and then HERCULES (1875-76), where he was advanced to Ord in November 1875. Subsequently served aboard H.M. Ships CRUISER (1876-79) where he achieved A.B. status in June 1877, and then drafted to DECOY (1881-85) earning his Egypt medal and campaign clasps, and was advanced to P.O. 2nd Class in September 1884, and P.O. 1st Class in December 1884. During his time aboard H.M.S. CAROLINE (1886-90) he was disrated to A.B. in June 1886, but regained his Petty Officer status as 2nd Class in 1887 and 1st Class in 1889. Served aboard H.M.S. AUDACIOUS (1891-93) and PENGUIN (1893-95), where once again he was disrated to Able Seaman during July 1894 but by June 1895 had regained in stages his P.O. 1st Class status. He was pensioned to shore on 17 August 1896, and joined the R.F.R. in 1902 and discharged on attaining his 50th birthday in 1907. He had lost good conduct badges on three occasions, thus debarring him from award of the LS & GC medal.
