Ludlow T. Colthurst was born on 18 October 1852. He joined in the rank of Surgeon at Netley Hospital on 8 August 1876, and was appointed to Plymouth Naval Hospital within days to serve there for five months. He subsequently served aboard H.M. Ships SEAGULL (1877-79), and ELK (1879-81) where he received the thanks of the Spanish Government for attention to a wounded officer of the Spanish Navy during an attack on the city of Buenos Aires on 22 June 1880. Serving next aboard HUMBER (1881-84) where he earned his Egypt and Soudan campaign rewards, he was landed during the Suakin Campaign for duty in conjunction with the Army Medical Department attending the wounded from the front, and was also sent to the front after the battle of Tamaai in charge of additional medical stores for the wounded. He served his last two Commissions aboard H.M. Ships FLORA (1884-86) and SCOUT (1887-89) where he received promotion to Staff Surgeon on 31 March 1888. He was retired ‘unfit’ on 26 November 1891, and died on 10 November 1922.
