Charles Umfreville was born in Calcutta, India, on 30 November 1861. He entered as a Naval Cadet aboard H.M.S. BRITANNIA on 15 January 1875 until December 1876, and then to MINOTAUR (1876-81) where he was promoted to Midshipman on 11 April 1877, and afterwards to Sub Lieutenant on 23 March 1882. To earn this campaign medal he served aboard H.M.S. STARLING (1 November 1884 to 29 July 1885) where he was promoted to Lieutenant on 31 December 1884. Subsequently served abpard H.M. Ships PYLADES (1886-89), TRIUMPH (1890-94), HEBE (1894-97), and afterwards promoted to Commander on 31 December 1897 whilst on the books of VICTORY. Whilst aboard H.M.S. SHEARWATER (1901-04) he was promoted to Captain on 31 December 1903, and his last vessel was NIOBE (1905-06). He was retired as ‘unfit’ on 30 November 1908, and died on 14 February 1913.
