John Turner was born in Hackney, Middlesex, on 14 February 1856 and joined the service as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. ACHILLES on 22 June 1871. Drafted to H.M.S. BARRACOUTA as a Boy 1st Class in March 1873, advanced to Ordinary Seaman in April 1874 and Able Seaman in October 1876, prior to being paid off in April 1877. Whilst aboard H.M.S. COQUETTE (1879-83) he gained the status of Petty Officer 2nd Class in October 1881 and became a P.O. 1st Class a month later. Latterly in his career he served aboard H.M.Ships RUBY (1885-89) and AUDACIOUS (1890-94) before being pensioned on 14 December 1895.
