Francis Cahill was born in Sheerness, Kent, on 2 May 1857. He entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker aboard H.M.S. PEMBROKE on 9 September 1879, and subsequently served aboard the Store Ship WYE (December 1879 to October 1883). He died whilst serving aboard ALECTO from remittent fever on 11 February 1886, not having served long enough to qualify for a Long Service & Good Conduct medal.
