William Lister was born in Glasgow on 27 May 1858. He joined the service as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. BLACK PRINCE on 24 January 1874, and then served aboard IMPREGNABLE (1874-75) where he was advanced to Boy 1st Class during February 1875, followed by RESISTANCE (1875-77) where he was made an Ord during May 1876 and an Able Seaman on 1 January 1877, and in ACHILLES he was advanced to Leading Seaman on 1 May 1879, followed by advancements to Petty Officer 2nd Class and 1st Class respectively during January and August 1881 aboard DUNCAN. He earned his Egypt campaign awards whilst serving aboard HUMBER (9 March 1882 to 18 August 1885). He was discharged to shore on 22 June 1886, having completed his engagement term of ten years and was never awarded a Long Service & Good Conduct Medal.
