This coin, and that in the next lot, is part of a group of two dozen or so pieces that appeared on the market in both England and the USA in the early 1990s, and which almost certainly have a Hampshire provenance. Mr Lessen’s detective work shows that the group probably contained four Southampton mint-signed coins and might have been unearthed as a result of the construction of the extension to the M3 motorway at the time
