D.S.M. London Gazette 15 May 1916: ‘In recognition of the services of Petty Officers and Men of the Eastern Mediterranean Squadron during the evacuation of the Gallipoli Peninsula in December 1915-January 1916:- Chief Stoker (Pensioner) William Rice, ON 161703).’

Information provided with the lot states that on 23 September 1915, Rice joined the H.M.S.
Europa II ‘Stavros beach party’, and that it was for services in this capacity at the end of 1915, and for his service from 1 January to 21 February, 1916, aboard H.M.S. St George, that he was awarded the D.S.M.
