Thomas Joseph Maddox was born in Liverpool on 25 December 1874, and was a blacksmith prior to joining the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. IMPREGNABLE on 14 April 1891 when aged 16 years. He served in China aboard ESK from June to December 1900 and was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal in 1907 whilst serving aboard H.M.S. CLYDE. He was killed in action at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916, when H.M.S. QUEEN MARY blew up with the loss of 57 Officers and 1,209 Men, just 3 Officers and 6 Men surviving.
