Approximately 16 M.S.M’s of this type were awarded. The date on the edge of the M.S.M. ‘5 Apl. 1936’ is the date of commencement of payment of his M.S.M. annuity, his medal was not despatched until 11 September 1936.
Alfred Botting was born on 28 March 1860 in Brighton, Sussex. He enlisted on 28 May 1878, but during his 21 years of service never served a full Commission aboard any ship. He was promoted to Corporal in July 1880, to Sergeant in October 1883 and to Colour Sergeant on 9 July 1896, having been awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal on 20 July 1888, and pensioned on 27 May 1899. He was mobilised on 20 August 1914 and was soon after sent to Ostend where he served from 26 August to 1 September 1914. For the remainder of the war he served in the Recruiting Office, Birmingham, and was demobilised on the 18 September 1919. This was not however the end of his military career, since on the 1st of January 1920 he was remobilised at Chatham to serve with the ‘Naval Inter-Allied Commission of Control’ in Berlin, being finally demobilised on 4 August 1920 when aged 60 years. He is entitled to a 1914 Star Trio for service at Ostend with the Chatham Battalion.
