Edward Charles Cortis, later Stanford (1837-99), Worthing, Sussex; the first medal awarded for chemical products obtained by the destructive distillation of seaweed. A pioneer photographer in his late teens, he was advertising his services in that trade by 1855. Stanford was later a pioneer of the Scottish seaweed industry, based on the island of Tiree, to where he moved in 1864 and worked for the North British Chemical Co.
