Thomas Horsman was born in Headingley, Leeds, and was a miller by trade. He attested for the Grenadier Guards in October 1852, and served with the 3rd Battalion in the Crimea. Horsman was wounded in action at the Battle of Inkermann, 5 November 1854. He advanced to Sergeant, and was discharged 18 September 1856.
