H. Nanson served with Vallantin’s Heidelburg Volunteers during the Boer War. The unit was formed by Major John Maximillian Vallentin, Somerset Light Infantry, when employed as District Commissioner of Heidelburg, and was largely composed of surrendered Boers. They were chiefly employed on the Standerton line, their duties being to protect the line and the possessions of surrendered Burghers in the area.
