M.B.E. London Gazette 21 June 1945, the original recommendation states:
‘This officer has been continuously second in command of a Transport Column RASC. During the past six months he has had to assume exceptionally heavy responsibilities, involving very long hours of work under very trying conditions. He has at all times performed his duties with zeal and initiative of a high order. His devotion to duty and complete disregard for his own personal interests has always, in the most arduous conditions, set a fine example and has been an inspiration to all ranks.’

Derrick Sawyer initially served as a Cadet at the Officer Producing Centre (R.A.S.C.), prior to being commissioned Second Lieutenant, 13 July 1940. He served during the Second War as a Lieutenant, advancing to Acting Lieutenant-Colonel. Sawyer was promoted to Major, 1 January 1949, and granted the rank of Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel.
