D.C.M. London Gazette 15 April 1916:

‘For conspicuous gallantry in taking up rations, carrying messages and laying cable under heavy fire.’

William H. Hicks entered the Mesopotamia theatre of war as a Gunner in the Royal Field Artillery in December 1915. Subsequently transferring to the Royal Engineers, he was awarded the D.C.M. for the above cited deeds as a Lance-Corporal in 33rd Divisional Signal Company and his MIC entry verifies his entitlement to the General Service Medal for the Kurdistan operations, while employed as an Acting Sergeant in the Indian Signalling Corps. At which point he transferred to the Royal Air Force is currently unknown but he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal as a Flight Sergeant in April 1936; the published roll refers.
