D.C.M. London Gazette 1 January 1918; citation 17 April 1918:
‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He has taken part in several important engagements, and his coolness and courage on many occasions were a splendid example to his men.’

Robert Fletcher attested for the Northumberland Fusiliers at Walker-on-Tyne, and served with the 5th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 20 April 1915, being advanced to Regimental Sergeant Major. He was Mentioned in Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig’s Despatch of 9 April 1917 (London Gazette 22 May 1917), as well as being awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal and the French Croix de Guerre.

Note: The recipient’s Medal Index Card and D.C.M. gallantry card both state ‘Replaced February 1968’; however, the medals in this lot are undoubtedly the original issues.
