Five: Petty Officer J. C. French, Royal Navy

John Charles French was killed in action on 20 September 1943, whilst serving aboard H.M.S. Escapade when one of its own anti-submarine devices exploded prematurely when in action against an enemy submarine. Fifteen men were killed and a further ten seriously wounded in this accident. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
