Arthur Nye, a native of East Grinstead, served with the Royal Sussex Regiment in South Africa during the Boer War, where he was slightly wounded at Retief’s Nek on 23 July 1900; was Mentioned in Lord Roberts’ Despatch of 4 September 1901 (London Gazette 10 September 1901); and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. He subsequently served during the Great War at home as temporary Regimental Sergeant Major of the 4th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for valuable service at home. He did not proceed overseas and was not entitled to any campaign medals for the Great War.
