Leslie Noel Malan was born in July 1877, and commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers on 31 December 1876, having won the Sword of Honour on passing out from Sandhurst. He served with the Tibet Mission as officer commanding the Sikkim Cooly Corps (Medal). Malan served throughout the Great War with the R.E. Railway Unit in East Africa (O.B.E. and brevet Major) and from 1927-30 was Chief Engineer, Malaya and Singapore. He retired in in the rank of Colonel in July 1930 and died at Folkestone on 2 March 1951. In addition to Great War medals he is also entitled to the Delhi Durbar medal for 1911.
