Peter Hoad was born in Ashburnham, near Battle, Sussex, in 1877, and attested for the Royal Sussex Regiment at Hastings on 8 January 1895. He served with the 2nd Battalion in India from 9 December 1896, and saw active service during the Tirah Campaign on 1897-98. He was discharged in India on 8 January 1907, after 12 year’s and 1 day’ service, and staying in India joined the Calcutta Presidency Battalion, Auxiliary Force India. He was awarded his Volunteer Force Long Service Medal per Indian Army Order 591 of 16 July 1925.
