George Richard Walsh was born in Deptford, Kent, in 1876, and attested for the Rifle Brigade at Woolwich on 19 November 1894, having previously served in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment. Posted to the 2nd Battalion on 25 February 1897, he served with the Rifle Brigade in Egypt and the Sudan from 12 July to 20 September 1898, and was present at the Battle of Omdurman, 2 September 1898. He subsequently took part in the occupation of Crete, 21 September 1898 to 1 October 18999, and then served in South Africa during the Boer War from 2 October 1899 to 24 September 1902. He returned home on 22 October 1904, transferred to the Army Reserve on 18 November of that year, and was discharged on 18 November 1908, after 12 years’ service. He saw further service during the Great War, with both the Rifle Brigade and the 10th Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles.
