Thomas Scott was born in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, in 1880, and attested there for the Seaforth Highlanders on 4 December 1898, having previously served in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers. He served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War from 21 June 1900 to 15 December 1902, and then with the 1st Battalion in India from 16 December 1902 to 20 December 1906. He transferred to the Army Reserve on 14 January 1907, and was discharged on 3 December 1910, after 12 years’ service.
