C. C. Shackleton served in Warren’s Bechuanaland Expedition of 1884-85, and having enlisted again in 1895 was commissioned Lieutenant in the Diamond Fields Horse on 1 January 1896, serving the following year in the Bechuanaland Rebellion. Promoted Captain on 14 January 1897, he served during the Defence of Kimberley, where he was one of four officers of the Kimberley Volunteer Regiment Mentioned in Lord Kitchener’s Despatch for the Defence of Kimberley (London Gazette 23 June 1902). He was subsequently involved in the Relief of Mafeking, and operations in the Orange Free State and Transvaal. He was promoted Major and appointed Commanding Officer of he Diamond Fields Artillery on 1 June 1903, before resigning his commission on 15 September 1903.
