Arthur Vickers was the son of Mr and Mrs A. Vickers of 4 Thoroughfare Yard, Magdalen Street, Norwich. He served during the Great War with the Norfolk Regiment in the French theatre of war from 9 October 1914.
Vickers was killed in action whilst serving with ‘D’ Company, 1st Battalion, Norfolk Regiment on the Western Front, 4 September 1916. On the latter date the Battalion were in action on the Somme, ‘Moved opposite Falfemont Farm and attacked 3.10pm (4/9) - ‘A’ and ‘B’ Companies led assault on front of 500 yards - few men of ‘A’ Company reached south-west corner of farm - but soon bombed out. All but 2 officers were killed or wounded - progress only possible by crawling from one shell hole to another. Objective taken by 3am.’ (British Battalions on the Somme, by R. Westlake refers)
Private Vickers is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
