Henry George Daniells was born in Greenwich, London, on 28 March 1885, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class on 11 June 1901, serving in H.M.S. Impregnable. Transferring to H.M.S. Prince George on 16 January 1903, he was advanced Ordinary Seaman on 28 March 1902, and was promoted Able Seaman on 13 December 1904. He served during the Great War in H.M.S. Woolwich from 12 December 1913 to 28 April 1916; in H.M.S. Badger from 29 April 1916 to 18 April 1917; in H.M.S. Hereus from 19 April to 29 November 1917; and then in H.M.S. Victory from 30 November 1917 until the cessation of hostilities. He was awarded his Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 6 April 1918, before being invalided out of the Service suffering from varicose veins in the legs and groin on 1 December 1919. He was subsequently employed as Head Messenger at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, and was awarded his Imperial Service Medal in 1950 (London Gazette 28 April 1950).
