Henry George William Dondovich was born in Johannesburg, and served during the Great War initially with the 11th Infantry (Rand Light Infantry) in German South West Africa, before attesting for the South African Overseas Expeditionary Force at Potchefstroom on 13 August 1915, and served with the 3rd South African Infantry on the Western Front from 15 April 1916. He was wounded in action at the Battle of Delville Wood on 26 July 1916, and died the next day at No. 12 General Hospital, Rouen. He is buried in St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.
