James Archibald Knight Rutherford was born in Mafeking, South Africa, on 8 January 1908, and educated at Clifton College, Bristol. An Insurance Inspector by occupation, he attested for service as a Lieutenant in the Canadian Active Service Force on 10 August 1941, having previously served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Lorne Scots and 2nd Battalion Toronto Scottish Regiment. Granted the rank of Lieutenant, he held the rank of Acting Captain in October 1942 and was confirmed in that rank in January 1944. Posted to the U.K. in August 1944, he was promoted to Major in June 1945. He served as an Acting Lieutenant-Colonel in October 1946 and was promoted to that rank in July 1948, and was based in Washington, 1949-50. He served in Korea during 1953 and was transferred to the reserve in 1956.
