Percy Hampton was born in Sunderland, Co. Durham, on 18 June 1890, and attested for the Durham Light Infantry at Stockton on 9 October 1914. He served with the 15th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 9 October 1915, and was killed in action at Fricourt on the first day of the Battle of the Somme on 1 July 1916, on which date the Battalion suffered 388 casualties. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
