Campbell. 4-D, Gds.) the first three with light contact marks, otherwise very fine, the last extremely fine (4) £600-£700

Edwin William Campbell was born at Croydon, Surrey, and attested for the 4th Dragoon Guards at Brighton on 10 March 1883, aged 19 years 2 months, a clerk by trade. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in October 1884; Corporal, September 1885; Lance-Sergeant, December 1887; Sergeant, April 1888; Squadron Quartermaster Sergeant, October 1892; Squadron Sergeant-Major, September 1894. He served in India from September 1894 to March 1897, and from September 1897 to March 1899, including operations on the North West Frontier, Tirah 1897-98 (Medal with 2 clasps). Returning home in March 1900, he next served in South Africa with the 32nd (Duke of Lancaster’s Own) Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry, from 8 May to 17 October, 1902 (Medal with 2 clasps). He received his L.S. & G.C. medal in July 1901 (Army Order 163). He was discharged on 9 March 1906, whilst still attached to the Duke of Lancaster’s Own Imperial Yeomanry, and was appointed to His Majesty’s Body Guard on 26 June 1913. He subsequently received medals for the Jubilee of 1935 and Coronation of 1937. He died in Dulwich on 7 March 1942, aged 77. Sold with copied discharge papers and two copied photographs.
