Robert Austin was born in the Parish of Hinton, Farringdon, Berkshire, and attested for the Coldstream Guards at Oxford on 20 November 1850. He served in the Crimea and was ‘severely shaken by an explosion whilst on Redan Guard on 14th Novr. 1855’ (Medal with 4 clasps and Turkish medal). He was promoted Sergeant in May 1854, Quartermaster-Sergeant in November 1862, and was discharged on 2 January 1872, having been awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal with gratuity £15 in 1869. He joined the Body Guard on 9 February 1881, receiving the Jubilee Medal of 1887 with bar for 1897, and died on 2 March 1902.
