Ronald James Carfrae Hope was born in Benoni, Transvaal, in May 1922. He served during the Second War as a Gunner (qualified Wireless Operator Anti-Aircraft) with the 1/12 L.A.A. Regiment in Italy, and then transferred to the SAAF. Hope moved to Rhodesia in the 1950's and was Provincial Conservation and Extension Officer (Mashonaland South), and also was a Reservist in BSAP Reserve Section.
