A 19th century Papal ring, Italian, circa 1830, the large ring with square bezel mounted with a hinged iron panel revealing a velvet lined compartment, the panel engraved with the arms of Alessandro Farnese, Pope Paul III (papal reign 1534-1549), the broad tapering shoulders and sides decorated with oval ‘cameos’ of saints, with a lion to either side, together with a gilt metal oval glazed reliquary theca of St John the Baptist, enclosing paper cedula, the original red wax seal attached, ring height 53mm, reliquary theca dimensions 33 x 26.5mm.
