Samuel Joseph Rock was born in Birmingham on 8 July 1843, and joined the Navy as Acting Assistant Engineer 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. Himalaya on 15 February 1863; Engineer, 21 June 1859; Chief Engineer, 24 March 1882; Staff Engineer, 24 March 1886; Fleet Engineer, 24 March 1890. Served as Fleet Engineer in Boadicea, Flagship, in the Naval Brigade, under the command of Vice-Admiral Hon. Sir E. R. Fremantle, K.C.B., Commander-in-Chief, East Indies, for the punitive expedition against the Sultan of Witu, in East Africa, October 1890 (Medal with clasp). He retired as Inspector of Machinery on 17 July 1898, and died on 19 December 1926. Sold with copied record of service.
