South Africa 1834-53 (Sergt. Major P Kavanagh 27th Foot) officially re-impressed naming, very fine £200-£260

Patrick Kavanagh was born in the Parish of Templeodegin, near New Ross, County Wexford, and was attested for the 27th Inniskillings at Wexford on 17 February 1849, aged 18, a labourer by trade. He was promoted to Corporal in December 1843, to Sergeant in October 1845, and to Sergeant-Major in February 1859. He served abroad at the Cape of Good Hope for 6 years 8 months, taking part in the Kaffir War of 1850-53. He was also awarded the Indian Mutiny medal without clasp and the L.S. & G.C. medal with Gratuity of £5. He was discharged on 12 May 1863, suffering from chronic rheumatism and from intermittent fever contracted at Peshawar in 1857. Sold with copied discharge papers.
