James Cottrell was born at Warrington, Lancaster, and was attested for the 45th Foot at Liverpool on 15 June 1837, aged 18, a labourer by trade. He served at the Cape of Good Hope for 14 years 10 months, where he took part in the expedition to south Natal against Chief Foto from 7 January to 20 February 1848, thereby qualifying for a South Africa 1853 medal. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal with a Gratuity of £5, and was discharged on 3 August 1858. Sold with copied discharge papers and other research.
